WHAT IS THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE & HOW DOES IT WORK?
- The United States Electoral College is the body of individuals that actually elects the vice-president and president of the United States. Although many people believe that the president and vice president are actually chosen by popular vote; they are not. A group of people known as the electors votes, and it is their votes that decide the next president and vice president in an election. Each state and the District of Columbia have electors that represent the state.
- Every four years, voters elect a President and Vice-President. All but 2 states, the candidate who wins the majority vote in the state wins that state's electoral votes. In Maine and Nebraska, electoral votes are assigned by proportional representation, which means that the top vote-getter in those states wins two electoral votes(for two Senators)while the remaining electoral votes are allocated congressional district by congressional district.
