WELFARE & POVERTY
Donald Trump has very strong opinions when it comes to welfare and poverty. In Donald Trump’s book ‘TIME TO GET TOUGH’, he elaborates on how he believes “food stamps should be temporary; not a decade on the dole.”(Donald Trump) He continues by talking about how the food stamp program was created as a temporary assistance for families with momentary times of need. He believes when food stamp recipients are depending on food stamps for a long period of time, “it has to do with fraud”(Donald Trump). In the area of welfare Trump believes we need to turn back time and use the same system we used in the Welfare Reform Act of 1996, which stated that in order to receive your check a proof of job-training or that you were looking for a job was needed to ensure that you were seeking help in your financial difficulties. In an interview with Fox News, Trump states that Americans don’t have an incentive to work, but as a president he would create one (Ian Schwartz). He states, "We have to create incentives that they actually do much better by working. Right now, they have a disincentive (Ian Schwartz). They have an incentive not to work. The problem we have right now, we have a society that sits back and says we're not going to do anything (Ian Schwartz). And eventually the 50 percent cannot carry, and it's unfair to them, but cannot carry the other 50 percent” (Ian Schwartz). When asked if he can lift 50 million Americans out of poverty, Trump’s answer was a clear and straightforward “yes”, but when asked about his plan, Trump was hesitant and didn’t have a clear answer for the interviewer (Ian Schwartz).
